Wednesday’s Smilin’ Singles.

Alright so here at BurningOak.com this week I’m doing Smilin’ Singles. It’s my sad attempt at a play on words for single tracks that make me smile, and happy songs for those of you without a significant other during Valentine’s Day and the surrounding week. Hence, Smilin’ Singles. I promise the next time I have a theme week I’ll get a better name, this was kind of spur of the moment creativity, though. Check out all of this week’s Smilin’ Singles posts right here.

To start off the day, I’m going with a live version of one of my favorite Sublime songs, and probably the only Grateful Dead cover I’ve ever heard which I enjoy more than the original. From March 24th or 25th of 1995, a little over a year before Bradley passed away, this was recorded at Indieatlantic, Florida. It’s distributed as a bootleg titled A Day In The Sun, which you can download the entire copy of at SublimeArchive.com.

Sublime – “Scarlet Begonias (Live Dub)” from A Day In The Sun.

I’m a big Jack Johnson fan for the simple fact that it makes me want to take a nap, dance my ass off, and groove to it all at once. All of his stuff is pretty simple, and it almost all sounds the same, but unlike most artists who take the same approach I think it works for him. The first track I (and probably most of you) heard from him was Flake, and I have some good memories that this song reminds me of, so here’s Jack’s rendition from Bonnaroo 2005.

Jack Johnson – “Flake” live at Bonnaroo, June 11th, 2005.

Next is a little ditty that doesn’t stand out for any reason other than it’s a really happy song. I don’t think I need to explain myself on this one.

Mungo Jerry – “In The Summertime” from The Very Best Of Mungo Jerry.

This last track is a personal must for any good bonfire/kegger/house party/etc. It’s just a good chillin’ song.

Slightly Stoopid – “Mr. Officer” live on April 8th, 2004, at The Masquerade, Tampa, Florida.

I do believe that’s all for the evening, if you’re in Champaign go check out Oteil & The Peacemaker’s at Canopy Club tonight, and Go ILLINI!
