Summer Camp Artist Series entry #36 is none other than Glenn Kotche (pronounced Ko-Chee). Not familiar with him? Let me explain it in haiku form:

Glenn Kotche plays drums

You probably know him as

That guy from Wilco

Don’t sell him short though

He’s a one-man orchestra

You’ll be quite impressed

Ahhh… gotta love those haikus. I’m quite a fan myself. He’s also a member of Loose Fur, the “alt-country supergroup,” as some would put it. Glenn only has one track available for download, but I’m gonna have to send you to his page at Nonesuch Records, and then over to his MySpace for some more action.

From 2006’s Mobile:

Glenn Kotche – Projections of (What) Might…

Enjoy everyone, it’s some pretty crazy music, all percussion to my knowledge. Check out the video on his Nonesuch page if you have any interest in cool percussive instruments. In particular wait until the section where’s he’s focusing on the wire extending out from the head of his snare. He has about 15 different objects inserted through the head or around the edge of the snare, all of which make for some insanely cool sounds, most of which I guarantee you’ve never heard. Way later in the video he performs one of his songs for the camera, which consists of him opening like 45 boxes of what must be cicadas or crickets or some other sort of insect that makes that wonderful midsummer-night-in-the-country sound. Then he starts rocking out on the set and his crazy bells and springs and the mbira (thumb piano). Seeing this guy perform “Drums” would be *insane* (“Drums” is The Grateful Dead drum experiment that typically precedes “Space” during the middle of the second set at GD shows). But regardless of what I’d like to see him do, it’s quite an enjoyable video, although rather long. Kind of like this post. I’ll shut up now, just go listen to the man.
