Summer Camp Artist #03 – Coal Train

Third in our Summer Camp Artist Series is Coal Train, a Southern-Illinois based bluegrass trio. They’ve got an approach to bluegrass you don’t see from a lot of the Jam Band scene usuals and just enough twang for anyone to enjoy, ‘cuz you can’t get enough twang. They’re going to be more than a little hot at Summer Camp this year, though, considering their dress code: “They pride in true bluegrass tradition by fashioning themselves in suits and ties on stage, but when the place heats up, the coats come off and the ties loosen!” We’ll see how long that lasts. I’ve got 5 tracks from their 2004 release, and I’m a fan. They’re good. I recommend “Swingin’.” It’s quite different from the rest of the tracks, but it’s definitely got it’s own feel that you need to hear.
